Courses

The Sheiling is owned by Anthony Hovey, a highly qualified agriculturalist and experienced grower who, through his business, Skye Vegetables (www.skyevegetables.co.uk), supplies many of the premier hotels and restaurants on Skye such as the highly renowned Three Chimneys restaurant.

Anthony runs short “Grow Your Own Veg” training courses that can be combined with your stay at The Sheiling. The courses are biased towards beginners and those with limited space such as container grown vegetables, and are an interesting alternative to the usual holiday activities.

Courses are tailored to individuals and can cover a wide range of topics:

- Soil, manure and compost
- Prepaing new ground
- Making raised beds
- Growing in containers
- Digging, mulching, weeding and watering
- Seeds, sowing, planting and harvesting
- Crop protection
- Selling surplus produce

Course cost – £75 for two people.

Each trainee will also be invited to select which topics and specific crops they are particularly interested in, so that the training is relevant to their situation.
