Courses

The Sheiling is owned by Anthony Hovey, an agriculturalist and experienced grower who has run the market garden “Skye Vegetables” since 2004 (www.skyevegetables.co.uk). Some of the produce is delivered via the Food Link Community Interest Company (www.tastelocal.co.uk) which promotes the production and use of local food on Skye, and Anthony is one of its directors.

Anthony runs short “Grow Your Own Veg” training courses that can be combined with your stay at The Sheiling. The courses are biased towards beginners and those with limited space such as container grown vegetables, and are an interesting alternative to the usual holiday activities.

Courses are tailored to individuals and can cover a wide range of topics, including:

- Preparing new ground

- Making raised beds

- Growing in containers

- Digging, mulching, weeding and  watering

- Seeds, sowing, planting and harvesting

- Crop protection

- Selling surplus produce

Course cost – £75 for two people.

Each trainee will also be invited to select which topics and specific crops they are particularly interested in, so that the training is relevant to their situation.

Please contact Anthony directly for an advance no-obligation discussion about your training needs and to arrange a tailor made course (Email: skyeveg@aol.com). Please give at least 2 weeks notice to book a course.
